XenonMKV build 32 released: “The Arrow”

Too long in the making, XenonMKV build 32 is now available. This release is mostly intended for bugfixes, but should also improve efficiency working with multiple files. Notable changes include A_MPEG/L3 support (.mp3 files), an update indicator and better handling for aspect ratio “divide by zero” issues.

XenonMKV build 31 released: “Jump to Conclusions”

Build 31 of XenonMKV is now available (build 30 was a limited testing release.) This is primarily a bugfix build that aims to address some of the existing difficulties with mp4box and no MP4 file output. Check it out at the download page!

XenonMKV build 27 released - “Big Kahuna”

Build 27 is now available for public perusal from the Download page. New features include enhanced AC3 normalization options, a workaround for moving output files, and an MKV compatibility checker to determine if the file will likely play on your Xbox 360.

This is a generally recommended upgrade, so please grab it if you’ve been experiencing any issues or would like to take advantage of the MKV checker.

Build 26 is now available from the Download page. We’ve added a new developer to the project, Bill Robertson (BillRob458 from the forums) who has fixed an outstanding freezing issue with the utility.

XenonMKV build 25 released - “Squared Away”

Two massive bugfixes have been made in XenonMKV build 25, which is now available from the Download page. “Squared Away” fixes a bug in which output files could not be processed properly, and adds support for correcting output aspect ratios.

Please report any aspect ratio conversion issues or problems with 16:9 widescreen titles in the forum.

No spring Dashboard update for the Xbox 360: XenonMKV work continues

As a few people online have posted, there will be no Spring 2008 Dashboard update for the Xbox 360. While I applaud Microsoft for announcing the release of a DRM transfer utility (since I personally have some Rock Band tracks I’d like to play offline), this means that there will be no corresponding video player or codec upgrade during the Spring/Summer cycle. It could be as late as November or December before any progress is made on Microsoft’s end for the following issues, if at all:

5.1 channel audio support
>4GB file support for “other than WMV” formats
1080p bitrate/tearing issues

This is beside the fact that HD-DVD is now dead, and there’s no way to play a native BluRay disc on the 360.

As a result, development on XenonMKV will continue for the near future and I’m actively at work solving some of the outstanding issues. Keep in mind that certain MKV files will convert properly, depending on their source. For example, a no-name or non-scene download from BitTorrent (I don’t encourage copyright infringement, by the way) is more likely to have problems than a personal, properly-encoded, homemade BluRay rip.

In the near future I hope to have a bugtracking system and return to a more regular release schedule. Thanks to all the XenonMKV supporters!
